As the Ski Fit Network grows, I have been fortunate to spend time in some of the most desirable ski fields for Western Australian Snowriders. I have been able to meet the dedicated people who are responsible for the highest level of medical and rehabilitation care in these locations also.
I have been travelling to New Zealand for 10 years now. And there is no doubt, that Queenstown is the jewel in the crown of NZ’s tourism industry, particularly when it comes to winter destinations for Perth locals. It is after all, incredibly beautiful. But we all know, that the snow can be hit and miss. I have been in the back country in knee deep fresh powder, but have also spent time frustratingly riding on frozen surfaces, that haven’t seen fresh snow for days.
But there is a new trend now. As Queenstown and Niseko both become ever more expensive and popular, we are looking for alternatives to get our fix. Hence, my latest trip.
Let me introduce you to a place called Methven, that you may not have heard of.
1 hour’s drive from Christchurch lies the gateway to Mount Hutt and the surrounding, lesser know ski fields of the region. These include Porter’s, Craigieburn and Mount Dobson to name a few.
Mount Hutt has been voted New Zealand’s best ski field for the past 2 years and on arrival, it’s easy to understand why.
The ski field is significantly higher in altitude than those in the south, and the terrain is expansive and challenging. The surrounding countryside is breathtaking, which means driving to the fields is as enjoyable as arriving on them.
In regards to getting to Methven, there is a very straightforward and not-too-demanding route. Direct flights from Perth to Auckland and then regular connections onto Christchurch are darn nice on the Air New Zealand Dreamliners. I have also been told that there is a plan to commence direct flights Perth to Christchurch, so watch this space.
The town of Methven has all the necessary amenities and services, with the feel of a country town. So if you prefer to not be stuck in Queenstown traffic and sidestepping crowds every night, you need to check this place out.
The medical services and Physiotherapy services are second to none and as part of The Ski Fit Network, Contact Physiotherapy in Methven have you well covered.
My only tip is to be prepared for some more demanding terrain than Queenstown. Get in shape before you arrive, and get yourself a guided lesson to start the trip to learn the lay of the land.
